Cookie Information launches a new and updated cookie Knowledge Base. This improves cookie purpose transparency and will give you fewer unclassified cookies on your site.
We have moved from cookie specific descriptions to service specific descriptions. What does that mean? In stead of classifying cookies as either functional, statistic or marketing cookies based on the function of the specific cookie, we know classify cookies based on who owns the cookie.
With our new classification, we no longer look at what data the specific cookies collect and process, but what those who own the specific cookie use the data for.
Google's _NID cookie
Google's _nid(?) cookie is typically classified as a functional cookie which is used by Google to remember your preferences and other information such as your preferred language (e.g. English), how many search results you wish to have shown per page (e.g. 10 or 20), and whether or not you wish to have Google’s SafeSearch filter turned on.
The cookie is set by Doubleclick (owned by Google) and helps Google to create an online profile of the user based on interests and search behaviour with the purpose of showing relevant ads. That is, the cookie's main purpose is marketing .
How will the changes affect my site?
First and foremost, our new classification means your site will experience fewer unclassified cookies. Unclassified cookies have led to some concern, as it has been difficult to determine what kind of (personal) data the cookies have collected and processed.
This is going to change, because we no longer will have to analyze the specific cookie, but only its owner and for what purpose the owner collects and process the data.
This improves transparency on your site and the cookies you use with respect to your visitors and customers. Now they will more clearly be able to see, which personal data the cookies collect.
What am I going to do?
You don't have to do anything. We'll make sure all your cookies are updated with descriptions and proper classifications.
But if you do have first-party cookies on your site, you have to deliver cookie descriptions and classifications (as usual) for these cookies. Contact our support, if you have any questions regarding this.
Do you still experience many unclassified cookies, then book a meeting with Karoline and let's have a look at them together.
